Windows 8 and OS X Lion: Finding the Better Option Between the Duo

To Stack up Windows 8 against Mac OS X Lion, one may argue that it's too early considering the former is still under development. Undeniably Windows is the most popular operating system used globally whereas Apple is known to make premium products that cater to a certain section of computer users. Microsoft is coming up with Windows 8 after having faced tough competition from Apple's Mac OS.

Both the operating systems have been designed by taking cues from their smartphone counterparts. Apple has come out victorious in the fight for OS supremacy while Windows has been known to be an organization that is concerned chiefly with software. Post release, OS X Lion has signified Apple's shifting of focus from hardware to an organization that makes magnificent operating systems.

Current state of events reveals that Windows 8 and Mac OS X Lion will be formidable rivals to each other. As always, Apple has wowed users with OS X Lion. And ever since Microsoft announced Windows 8, people have been waiting impatiently to lay their hands on it.

Let's find out which would turn out to be the most popular in this battle of operating systems.

The design and aesthetics

As mentioned earlier, both Windows 8 and OS X Lion have been inspired from their smartphone/tablet's counterparts. Windows Phone 7 and iOS have shaped both the operating systems respectively. Both the operations systems use interfaces that support multi-touch gestures. On the Lion, the touch interface gives you a better feel of browsing the documents physically. When you scroll down the trackpad, the document on screen scrolls to the bottom.

On Windows 8, touch connect has been designed to both physical and virtual interaction with keyboard. You can also use your joystick, trackpad, touchscreen and mouse to interact. Besides, the snazzy search symbols have been done away with. They have been replaced with more sophisticated and high contrast menu with intelligent and advanced symbols.

The app menu on Mac OS looks elegant. So does the one on Windows 8. Microsoft has gone one step farther by providing snippets of information on the app tiles so that users need not load the apps unless required.

Compatibility with devices

The Lion like its predecessors is compatible only with Macbooks and iMac. The iPhones and iPads will not support it. Microsoft on the other hand is coming up with an operating system that is compatible with x86 based personal computers, ARM based tablets as well as smartphones. Tablet manufacturers will find Windows 8 to be a more viable option with regards to the platform. From the manufacturers' perspective, Windows 8 is more appealing.

As for the users, universal support will provide them one common platform for all devices. According to an industry analysis, 85% of the tablet users would prefer their tablets and personal computers to have the same look and feel. Until the official launch, it cannot be ascertained whether this unanimity will be accepted or not by users.

The Individual App Stores

Apple has had its own app store for a long time. They made it a success with programs like iTunes and intelligent selection of devices. Meanwhile, Microsoft has come up with its 'Windows Store' this time that will come together with Windows 8. Apps for both tablets and PCs would be found under one roof. Users can browse and test the apps before downloading. The app store will be pinned on to the home screen of the operating system.

Users will witness varied high-level approaches to Windows 8 and OS X Lion. This will be contradicted by huge number of similarities as well. Both the organizations have strategically implemented mobile technologies in traditional computing devices of desktops and laptops. The best of technologies have been selected and used in personal computers. Nevertheless, they are expected to do justice to personal computers.
